Design Ideas: Since the eighteenth century, bergenias have been planted in masses at the base of statues and fountains due to their dense growth and interesting leaves. A natural tolerance of wet ground due to their origins in saturated soils of Siberia may have led to their popular connection to water features. Ever since they have been favored for edging walkways, lawns and anywhere a dense perimeter of low growing plants is desired. The large flat leaves make a great tool for contrasting against feathery or lacy foliage in woodland and shaded borders. It has also found a home in rock gardens They are exceptional packed into classical pots as a dense clump of uniquely textured foliage.

Thrives in moist, humus-rich soils, but adaptable to most well-drained soils. Water deeply, regularly during first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Once established, water regularly to maintain evenly moist soil; tolerates dry shade. Remove spent blooms for a tidy appearance. Prune away old foliage as new leaves emerge.

Customer Reviews

arrived in great condition.
by Don, January 14, 2018

The plants were in great condition when they arrived and have not suffered any apparent shock from being planted. They have only been in the ground a few weeks and are still settling in. I will be happy to review them again in a couple of more months. My local nursery, Cherry Lane, in Arroyo Grande, was very helpful with planting hints when I picked them up. I have since made them my first stop for new plants.
