Design Ideas: Plant this highly ornamental evergreen shrub in a spot where it can dress up the cool-season garden with its showy, upright clusters of pale green flower buds that form early and persist, finally opening to lovely bell-shaped flowers in late winter to spring as colorful new spring foliage emerges. Because its lower growing, spreading form is easily maintained at less than three feet, this is an ideal shrub for massing under larger trees, or grouped to anchor the back of a border, and is easily maintained as a small clipped hedge.

Provide well drained, humus rich, acidic soil. Shelter from harsh wind. Follow a regular watering schedule the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Apply an acid fertilizer after bloom and mulch to keep roots cool.
