Design Ideas: This assertive grower makes a good screen on a trellis for hiding the potting bench or trash cans. (You would never guess what's behind such a beautiful vine!) It should be planted where you can admire the fragrant autumn flowers and silvery seed heads that follow.

Thrives in well-drained, slightly alkaline soil, with roots sheltered and top growth in the sun. Mulch soil surface to conserve moisture. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to establish extensive root system; reduce frequency once established. Hard prune and fertilize in early spring. Provide support of a trellis or arbor.

History

A prolific grower and bloomer, sweet autumn clematis has the ability to produce many seed heads and prolifically reseed. This allows it to quickly naturalize in some southern states, if left unchecked. However, when properly maintained, this vine can be a welcome asset to the garden, providing fast coverage and blooms at a time of year when little else is of interest.

Sweet I was Wrong...
by Donna, May 11, 2017

This is my second review now that I fully understand this plant. I planted it in the fall so the beginning of January it didn't look like it was going to make it. I was wrong and boy is it growing and now with summer fast arriving I can hardly wait till it starts to bloom! I bought two and both trellises have them on one side. The other the Pink Jasmin. They are destine to meet! I like my trellis to be unusual.

Sweet Autumn
by Donna, March 23, 2017

I planted this in October of 2016. It was really beautiful and green no flowers but thought it would need time. The winter was a bit harsher then last year however the leaves look like they are struggling now. Maybe by fall it will be better. It looks like honeysuckle in the picture. I have been through two honeysuckle plants and they just don't do well for me. I feel this plant won't either. I haven't given up and I gave it some food.
