Design Ideas | This Mahonia is less suited to Western native landscapes because of its unique, exotic character. Its fall color and tall growth have made it a favorite for Asian-inspired garden themes. A fine single specimen near rocks and waterfalls. Gang them under the high canopies of conifer or broadleaf shade trees. Or, use as foundation planting on those difficult northern exposures. A good plant for shaded courtyards and around recessed entries. Can be clipped to fit gracefully into the most difficult spaces. Also makes a reliable dense hedge with seasonal offerings of flowers, berries and fall color. |
Flower Color | Yellow |
Foliage Color | Green |
Companion Plants | Magnolia (Magnolia); Lily of the Valley (Pieris); Rhododendron (Rhododendron); Viburnum (Viburnum); Mountain Laurel (Kalmia) |
Care | Thrives in moderately fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Shelter from drying winds and harsh sun in hot summer regions. Water deeply, regularly during first growing season to develop an extensive root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates mild drought. Fertilize in spring. Prune lightly for a tidy appearance. |
