Design Ideas Forsythia is the first of the old-fashioned deciduous flowering shrubs to bloom in spring. Plant as a single specimen in an out-of-the-way place where it can spread and bloom into a golden mass then blend into the background for the rest of the season. Although Forsythia may be sheared or heavily pruned, doing so decreases its drama. Can be used as espalier, bank cover, hedge or screen. So rugged it may naturalize in woodland or wild gardens.
Flower Color Yellow
Foliage Color Green
Companion Plants Witch Hazel (Hamamelis); Quince (Chaenomeles); Redbud (Cercis); Lenten Rose (Helleborus); Iris (Iris)
CARE
Care Very adaptable to most soils; thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich loams. Best flowering in full sun. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer in spring. Prune to shape, immediately after flowering.
