Design Ideas: So low growing, this hardly seems like a Rhododendron, but its luscious purple flowers give it away. It's a natural for filling in the edges of shade gardens, and is perfectly scaled for courtyards and city gardens. A very romantic plant for cottage gardens anywhere. Treat it as a woody groundcover in front of taller plantings. Excellent for disguising the exposed legs of larger acid-loving shrubs. A natural for around the edges of water features and water gardens.

Provide organically rich, well-drained, acidic soil. Apply a thick layer of mulch to keep roots cool, avoiding the crown. Avoid harsh afternoon sun exposures and shelter from drying winter winds. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Feed with an acid fertilizer after bloom.
