History

This garden perennial falls into the mint family along with all the useful herbs. It is known as bugle weed and the more ground hugging species were the carpet bugles. The genus was assigned by Linnaeus from the Latin for "not Yoked" which refers to a certain part of the flower. There are over 50 different species, this one named A. reptans, from the Latin for creeping, which describes its growth habit. Ajuga was an ancient medicinal and used as a wound coagulant, which led to it's lesser known common name, "carpenter's herb".

Customer Reviews

Love this plant
by Jano, June 7, 2020

I bought this plant 4 different times from 3 different retailers -- including through Monrovia online. Love this plant. Everywhere I plant it, it takes off! Most recent plants went into some fairly wet spots (I planted 2 others in some drier areas in the garden last year). I swear they started growing noticably almost immediately!

Hard To Kill
by Arbow, July 10, 2018

This is one tough little plant that seems to do great. It loves my mostly my clay soil and seems to do fine with a weekly short rain shower most of the time. Planted in a garden bed to out compete the invading grass and give my garden some color. Very hardy, can be stepped on, etc and comeback like a pro.
