Tough Plant
by Donna, July 15, 2020

I used this Carmel Heuchera in my container on my front porch for at least 2 years. I pulled it out as it was suffering from being squeezed out (thinking it would die anyway). I stuck in the ground in the back next to the terrace with boxwoods and lady ferns. It gets about 6 hours of full sun and it is very happy. It\'s a very hardy plant. Beautiful leaf colors.

Great in a tricky place in Zone 8

I stuck 3 of these coral bells in a sun bed along the north side of my house. Due to the shape of my house, they are blocked from direct morning light and late afternoon light, but are in full sun otherwise. I was initially concerned about their placement, given how much sunlight they would be getting, even planted next to taller boxwoods, but they have held out like a champ and grown huge! I will be planting another in mostly red clay soil soon, and will see how they tolerate that. We have exceptionally wet weather, so I was pleased to see they could withstand being at the corner of the porch and house where we get tons of run off when it rains.

While I love Heucheras in general, this one is the only one in my garden giving me trouble. A few weeks after purchasing this plant last year, it started to show rusty spots that I haven't been able to get under control. All of the surrounding Heucheras seem to be unaffected, and this fall I have decided to dig this one up to protect the others. Not sure if this is a common issue with this particular one?
