Native to South Africa, this rugged, solitary succulent provides striking texture and color-year round by virtue of interesting foliage and flowers. Foliage color depends on light intensity; pinkish red in hot sun and bluish-green in part shade. Showy flowers atop of a tall, multi-branched stalk can range from bright red to gold. A drought tolerant selection for rock gardens or containers. Evergreen.

Grows easily in lean, loose, sandy or rocky, fast-draining soils; indoor plants are best in a cactus soil mix. Water regularly in first growing season to establish root system; drought tolerant once established, particularly in coastal regions. Avoid excess water in cool season. Hardy and evergreen to Zone 8b, although prolonged cold may damage foliage.


South African natives know this plant informally as the "Bontaalwyn" in Afrikaans, or "Lekhala" in the Sesotho language. The juice from the leaves is traditionally used as soap by the local people, yet the seeds are considered to be poisonous.
