Design Ideas: All columnar evergreens are powerful tools for garden design. This very narrow form is excellent for barren two story walls of buildings where conditions are too challenging for other less rugged species. Use as a pair to flank a gateway or entry, even a fountain or large sculpture. When lined up in a windrow they are useful in cutting winter and summer winds, and make an excellent screen to block out tall neighboring buildings or unsightly land uses. In large institutional plantings their uniformity of growth is ideal for vistas and forced perspective. Juxtapose with less rigid trees with seasonal color for high contrast, and bounce blue cast foliage against golden evergreens for incredible winter drama.

Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.

Junipers produce berries, relished by birds, require up to three years to become fully ripe. They contain volatile oils. In Europe the distillation of this oil has fueled its use in medicinal preparations, today strictly veterinary but formerly as a household diuretic. Juniper berries are the primary flavoring for gin.
