Design Ideas: This great native flower is perfectly adapted to the grasslands of the American West. It is drought resistant and ideal for dryland or wild gardens. Equally at home in traditional perennial borders, where it is stunning against taller ornamental grasses. Even works well in porous ceramic or wood containers, provided the soil is very quick to drain.

Provide average, well-drained soil; tolerates poor soils. Water deeply, regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; once established, tolerates periodic dry spells. For a tidy appearance, remove old, faded foliage in early spring. Divide every 2 to 3 years in early spring.

History

These flowers open in evening for night flying moths to pollinate them. Moths can be seen lingering around the flowers very early in the morning.
