'Little Woody' Redbud, Cercis canadensis
by wildbarrett, May 28, 2016

I planted mine in zone 5/5b several years ago, in a garden on the shores of Lake Erie where we get lake-effect snows and bitter winds directly down from Canada to provide some harsh drying winters, prolonged bitter cold and heavy snows. Have not had a single problem with this little tree. I JUST LOVE IT, one of my very favorites planted. Only advice I can give, is; this tree has a very ornamental form, which does not particularly succumb to aberration by rapid growth. It grows more enchantingly formed, in a petite and plodding way :). I read up on it and decided on where I would position it, but now find I wish I had gone ahead and created its own full nook. It's just lovely, and the leaves are crinkly for summer interest, too, so you do want to keep it where you can fully enjoy this special tree. Very sweet when near a flagstone area, either patio or as a stacked wall backdrop. I watered (pretty) faithfully during the first 3 summers which were quite hot, and now, this spring, find I will probably trim a few newly formed lower branchlets off this coming winter, to help it keep its showy, demure, twisty trunk form. It's a gem in my yard, and greatly loved. After year 1, had to pull up a flagstone patio to move the flagstones as a small stepped grotto for it, that's how very endearing it is! For greatest enjoyment, keep this enchanting crinkly twisty elfin away from Eastern redbuds, lilacs, and other green heart-shaped leaved trees, plants and shrubs, where it can become visually over-lorded. A GREAT TREE, and a real trooper for the weather we have here!
