Design Ideas: This Plum is the ideal small, color accent tree for regions too warm to grow Beech. The spring flowers are a secondary bonus for multi-season accent. Large enough to use as a front-yard tree in city lots or as a well-behaved street tree in high-density neighborhoods. These are bold color statements to be used sparingly and in conjunction with lots of rich green plants. Use as singles or in a small cluster of three. Try a matched pair to flank gateways and driveway entries or in an orchard-like row to screen neighboring views.

Provide humus-rich, well-drained soil. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; once established, reduce frequency. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Prune for shape and structure after flowering.

History

It is believed that plants dubbed, P. pissardii, imported into France by M. Pissard gardener to the Shah of Iran may be the source of the European and Burbank's stock.
