A highly adaptable native that tolerates poor soils and occasional flooding. Foliage emerges golden-yellow, matures to chartreuse, and returns to yellow in fall. The pyramidal form and irregular branching works well as a landscape specimen in difficult landscapes. Kelly's Gold is a male cultivar and does not set unwanted seedlings. Deciduous.

Thrives in average, evenly moist, well-drained soil, but adaptable to a range of soil conditions. Water deeply, regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; reduce frequency once established. Apply fertilizer in early spring. Prune in winter to shape or structure and to remove dead or damaged branches.


The Acer negundo species is native to North America and is commonly found growing alongside streams and lakes, and near marshlands, in the floodplains of the Mississippi River Valley, in a range that encompasses Mississippi to Michigan; it can be found growing along the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains and as far east as New York, and southern regions of Canada. It is highly adaptable to a range of moisture and environmental conditions. The species is notorious for prolific spread of unwanted seedlings, however, 'Kelly's Gold' is a male cultivar and will not produce seedlings.
