Description:

Bushy, vigorous plants with green stems flower profusely in spring. Ruby-red blooms with golden highlights. This well-behaved hybrid tolerates poor soil and requires little care. Green stems add winter interest in the landscape. Provides good erosion control on slopes or hilly areas. Deciduous.

Thrives in average to poor, well-drained soils. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Drought tolerant, once established. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Prune annually after flowering to remove seedpods and reshape.

History

While in some environments, common brooms (Cytissus scoparius) can re-seed and spread to form dense stands that tend to crowd out native plants and is considered to be an invasive species in California and the Pacific Northwest, hybrid cultivars of this plant are much less aggressive and some do not produce viable seed.
